Buffy Sainte-Marie (natural February 20, 1941) is a Canadian First Nations musician, composer, visual artist, educator and social activist.

She was natural in the Cree reserve in the Qu'Appelle valley, Saskatchewan. She was late adopted and grew up within Maine and Massachusetts. She received the Ph.D. around Art from either a University of Massachusetts & also holds degrees within each Oriental Philosophy and teaching.

In the 1960s, she wrote the protest song "Universal Soldier" and a love-song "Until It's Time For You To Go". Within 1967 she freed a album Fire & Fleet & Candle flame which contained a song Lyke Wake Dirge.

She appeared regularly in Sesame Street over a 5 month period of time from either 1976 - 1981.

Her song "Up Where We Belong", performed by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes for the film An Officer and A Gentleman, received an Academy Award in 1982. She appeared in the television pic A Broken Chain by having Pierce Brosnan.

Her songs use been performed by various creative person including Chet Atkins, Cher, Neil Diamond, Donovan, Janis Joplin, Taj Mahal, Elvis Presley and Barbra Streisand.

Her digital art creations own been displayed at a Glenbow Museum inside Calgary and the Our contries Indian Arts Museum within Santa Fe.

She won the Gemini Award in 1997 for her TV special Buffy Sainte-Marie: Higher In which You Belong, which was the number 1 instance she experienced performed her illustrious song to a survive audience. She was manufactured an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1998.
